GREAT Health Rural Graduate Medical Education Development Grant Program – Year 1 Funding Opportunity

Summary

The program, part of Initiative 4 - Growing a Highly Skilled Healthcare Workforce (Strategy 4.1: Rural Provider Workforce & GME Enhancements) within the GREAT Health Program, aims to strengthen physician workforce retention and recruitment, prioritizing specialties critical to rural health such as family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, OB/GYN, general surgery, geriatrics, and psychiatry. Eligible applicants may use funds for a range of activities, including creating new training sites, developing specialty tracks, minor GME-specific renovations, and expanding accredited training infrastructure. At least two awards are anticipated, subject to final budget and scope approval. Funded work must be completed by September 1, 2027.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants are ACGME-accredited or soon-to-be accredited Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs in Georgia serving one or more of the 126 rural/partial rural counties as defined by the Georgia Rural Enhancement and Transformation of Health Program (GREAT Health Program). Programs must meet one of the following: (1) Physically located in an eligible rural county; (2) Located in facilities that serve eligible rural counties and have rural-specific CMS designations (e.g., Critical Access Hospital, Rural Referral Center); or (3) Located outside of the designated counties but with participating residents conducting 50% or more of their required clinical training in eligible rural counties or eligible facilities.
