This grant program, issued by the Minnesota Department of Health, funds the establishment or expansion of rural residency training programs or tracks in Minnesota. Eligible applicants include programs, sponsors, and potential sponsors of rural residency programs, as well as clinical training sites seeking sustainability funds. The program targets medical residency training in designated primary care specialties (family medicine, general internal medicine, general pediatrics, general surgery, geriatrics, psychiatry, or postdoctoral psychology) at rural and underserved community-based sites, with the goal of strengthening rural health care workforce capacity.
Eligible applicants are programs, sponsors, and potential sponsors of rural residency programs located in Minnesota; program partners such as clinical training sites are eligible for program sustainability funds (RFP section 2.2). Eligible programs must train, or propose to train, medical residents in a new rural residency training program, a new rural residency training track within an existing residency program, or (for medical residents) a community-based ambulatory care center primarily serving the underserved that is proposing to add a rural residency training program or track. Eligible specialties: family medicine, general internal medicine, general pediatrics, general surgery, geriatrics, psychiatry, or postdoctoral psychology. Programs must be accredited by ACGME (or the American Psychological Association for postdoctoral psychology) or present a credible plan to obtain accreditation.
