The program aims to strengthen the rural healthcare workforce and address health equity in rural and Tribal Nation communities by expanding clinical training opportunities, increasing the number of graduates practicing in rural communities, and providing greater access to primary and mental health care in rural settings. Priority is given to programs with strong rural partnerships, history of rural training, plans for sustainability, team-based primary care models, and evidence-based health equity components. Funded projects must demonstrate meaningful partnerships with clinical sites, submit letters of commitment, and maintain compliance with program requirements, including progress and financial reporting.
Eligible applicants are existing, accredited clinical training programs for advanced practice registered nursing, dental, dental therapy/advanced dental therapy, mental health professional, pharmacy, physician residency, and physician assistant programs located in Minnesota. Accreditation (or candidacy) as specified by relevant accrediting bodies is required. Programs currently funded through the FY26 Rural and Underserved Clinical Rotations grant program or FY26 RHTP Rural Clinical Rotations Expansion grant program may not apply for funding on behalf of the same clinical training program. Applications must demonstrate compliance with accrediting bodies and, if aware of impending mergers/acquisitions, must disclose this to MDH. Grant funds are not transferrable to other entities.
