This opportunity provides up to $3,000,000 per award to support the planning, development, accreditation, and implementation of new or expanded Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs in rural or partially rural areas of Georgia, focusing on physician workforce recruitment and retention in high-need and priority specialties such as family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, OB/GYN, general surgery, geriatrics, and psychiatry. Funding may be used for creating new rural training sites, developing new specialty tracks, expanding training infrastructure, completing accreditation requirements, and other activities necessary to establish or expand GME program operations. Applicants must demonstrate organizational, clinical, and administrative readiness, sustainability planning for GME positions after grant funding ends, and secure commitment from hospital leadership, including a required letter of intent signed by the Board Chair, CEO, and medical staff leadership. All funds must be spent by September 1, 2027. Grants are awarded subject to final budget approval and evaluation of application quality, hospital readiness, and alignment with regional needs.
Eligible applicants are Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited or soon-to-be accredited Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs in Georgia serving one or more of the 126 rural or partial rural counties defined under the Georgia Rural Enhancement and Transformation of Health Program (GREAT Health Program). Applicants qualify if: (1) the training program is physically located in one of the designated counties; (2) the training facility serves patients in those counties and holds a rural-specific CMS designation (e.g., Critical Access Hospital, Rural Referral Center); or (3) participating residents conduct 50% or more of required clinical training in eligible rural counties or designated facilities. Applicants must meet at least one of these criteria as detailed in the official announcement.
